Since the Joshi family worshipped Lord Prabhu Ram, Chi. Vitthal was also engaged in the worship. His devotion to Prabhu Ram and Lord Hanuman gave him the natural inspiration to become strong in health and to render service to humanity just like Lord Hanuman. Later, he started to worship Lord Dattatreya.
Chi. Vitthal had a strong desire to meet God right from his very childhood and the family background was obviously favourable. He studied upto Standard 6 and left school permenantly after that since he realized that he was more attracted to meditation and recitation of God’s name than the normal school education. Even in his young age, he was not interested in playing like other children of his age. He had a strong liking towards association with saintly people. Instead of school books he developed a liking for reading books on philosophy, saints and Short Biography of great people. For hours together he would be absorbed in worshipping God with cleanliness, neatness and full of devotion.
It was impossible for anyone to miss the concentration and deep devotion that he displayed in the worship of God. During the worship, he would apply the sandalwood paste exactly in the center of the forehead of the idols in a very neat way. He would decorate the idols with flowers in a most disciplined and artistic manner. He would not like the flower petals, leaves of holy basil and durva grass scattered near the place of worship. He would personally take interest and make sure the best of the things (flowers, leaves of holy basil and durva grass) were offered to God during worship. On the whole, it was really very attractive and worth watching him perform the worship.
